Bladder Infection Causes and Treatment

As a major medical problem, bladder infection affects over 13 million people in the United States alone. It is also known as cystitis – a type of urinary tract infection (UTI). In fact, the urinary tract is sterile in nature. Only when it is invaded by pathogenic microbes, an infection may result.

Urine is produced by the kidney and it travels through two ureters (left one and right one) to pass into the bladder. When the bladder is full, the urine needs to be eliminated through urethra which is longer in men and much shorter in women.

What Causes Bladder Infection –

Mere presence of bacteria in the urine can lead to a bladder infection or to an infection of the entire urinary tract. The most common way bacteria gain access to the urinary system is through the urethra from vagina or from rectum. Generally, women are more susceptible to bladder infection due to their shorter length of urethra. Sometimes bacteria may enter the bladder through the urethra from nearer skin.

So far, the most common organism responsible for cystitis or bladder infection are Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria.
